A wonderful Sunday morning read Mark..I totally get you and your powerful writing truly spoke to me.....it's totally got me thinking. I'm old school and remember the joy of going to back rooms to see music and feeling that feeling of heaven and paradise being there with the band playing.....How you describe Superfans is exactly right.....we're all slaves to the algorithms but there is another way and I truly believe that this 'other way' is coming, even more so in the light of the greed-fest that is America and their fucking tech bro adoration......The Alt life will be/ is the sun that warms our faces....Thank you for your writing. Jo xx
I think the key things is that we've wasted at least a decade chasing an alternative route to the Superfans through untried, untested, and ultimately unworkable algorithms that work for the biggest companies in the world but don;t work for artists. I'd love to know how many Superfans an artist actually needs to have connected with in a grassroots music venue to have a viable sustainable career - because I suspect that number is infinitesimally smaller then the number of clicks required on a content platform and a whole lot more achievable with a constructed and carefully considered plan, rather than relying on pot luck and a a quirky video.
One hundred percent....💯....it would be a very interesting experiment to see the stats .....I run a small press and face exactly the issues you talk about in the publishing world....In the light of the Spotify and music platforms debacles, I am very interested to read your articles about live music....as a counterpoint to the stranglehold of the online - tiny royalties - steaming models, have always hoped that there would be a renaissance for live music on the back of excessive tech involvement in the world of all creatives.....your articles are intensely interesting....thanks for all you do.. Jo xx
Once again you write with such precision and clarity on a subject very close to my heart. I now only go to grassroots venues. I just don’t enjoy the Odean/Theatre/Dome/Stadium experience at all.
